Concordia Women's Basketball Drops 87-59 Non-Conference Game at Southern Conn. St.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Concordia Clippers women's basketball team took a break from their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Wednesday evening to visit Southern Conn. St. University. Concordia was unable to secure the road win as the Owls captured a 87-59 victory at the Moore Field House.

In the first quarter Southern Conn. St. jumped out to an early 7-1 advantage as the home team took a double-digit lead at the 5:32 mark, 14-4. The Clippers would close out the final four minutes of the period on a 9-3 run as the Owls held a 22-15 lead after 10 minutes of action.

The second quarter began with Concordia scoring a quick basket, but Southern Conn. St. followed with back-to-back three-point baskets to regain their double-digit advantage. Midway through the period the Owls used a 12-2 run to open up a 42-22 lead with 3:12 to go until halftime. Both teams would score one more field goal in the remaining minutes as the Clippers went into the locker room trailing 44-24.

Concordia came out in the third quarter with the first four points of the period as the defense would not allow a field goal until the 6:11 mark. The Clippers would score 17 points in the quarter, but 20 points for Southern Conn. St. would expand their lead as Concordia was behind 64-41 going into the final period.

In the fourth quarter the two sides traded points on the scoreboard until the Clippers' offense went into a drought. Concordia was held scoreless for 3:01 as the Owls manage to score nine unanswered points to lead 77-45 at the 5:28 mark. The Clippers would then use a 5-2 run to end their drought, but Southern Conn. St. would maintain their lead as the Owls secured the 87-59 win.

Junior Lyric Blanch (Kingston, N.Y.) led Concordia with 18 points as senior Jessica Rosalbo (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 12 points. The Clippers only recorded five assists in the game as Southern Conn. St. held a 39-23 rebounding advantage.

Concordia (2-8, 2-2 CACC) will be on the road again for a non-conference game at Pace on Friday night. Tip-off in Pleasantville, N.Y. is set for 7 p.m. as fans unable to attend can follow the action by clicking on the live stats and video links under the women's basketball schedule page on
