BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Concordia College women's basketball team returned to the court on Monday evening for a non-conference game against Southern Conn. St. in the Meyer Athletic Center. The Clippers would hold their ground against the Owls but were unable to come away with their second consecutive victory as Southern Conn. St. edged Concordia, 67-61.
In the first half the Clippers opened up with a 4-1 lead as the Owls rallied off six unanswered points to take the lead at 7-4. Concordia would regain the lead midway through the period and held a 15-12 advantage with 9:55 remaining on the clock. Both teams battled hard in the closing minutes of the half as the Clippers would only trail by four points, 34-30, at halftime.
The second half saw Southern Conn. St. open up a double-digit advantage following a 7-0 run as Concordia trailed 50-37 with 13:12 to go in the period. The Clippers would cut the deficit to single-digits on numerous occasions band after a three-point play by freshman Brianna Hendrick (Valley Stream, N.Y.) the deficit would only be six with 1:27 to go. Concordia would try to mount a late comeback in the final minute but could not manage to knot the score as the Owls held on for the 67-61 win.
Freshman Julianne Wilkinson (Red Hook, N.Y.) led the Clippers with a career-high 26 points off the bench while also adding two rebounds, two steals, and a block. Sophomore Jessica Rosalbo (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the starters for Concordia with 14 points while adding four rebounds while Hendrick recorded a career-best 10 points and added seven rebounds.
The Clippers shot 38.2% from the field in the game while Southern Conn. St. shot 33.8% in the game. The Owls would hold a 50-41 rebounding advantage as Southern Conn. St. held an 11-3 advantage in fast break points.
Concordia (1-7, 1-2 CACC) will have over a week off from their schedule as they will next host Caldwell University on Wednesday, December 17th.
