Clippers Women's Volleyball Opens Season with 3-0 Defeat at Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Concordia College women's volleyball team opened up their 2017 season on Wednesday evening at Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division match. The Clippers were unable to come away with the road victory as the Bears took the 3-0 win at Bloomfield Gym.

In the first set Concordia held a 5-4 advantage after a 5-2 run would put the Clippers ahead on the scoreboard. Bloomfield responded with nine unanswered points as the home team opened up a 13-5 advantage. Concordia scored back-to-back points to stop the scoreless drought, but the Bears would end the set on a 12-3 run to claim a 25-10 opening set victory.

The second set saw the Clippers jump out to a 6-3 lead as a 6-1 run for Bloomfield would give them the 9-7 advantage. Concordia would keep the score close as the Clippers were trailing by only a point midway through the set, 14-13, after a 4-1 run. The Bears would score four straight points to gain some breathing room and extended their lead to 18-13. Concordia looked to mount a late comeback after three straight points cut their deficit to 22-18, but Bloomfield scored three of the last four points to take the 25-19 win and lead 2-0 in the match.

The Bears came out in the third set with a 5-2 lead as back-to-back points for the Clippers would cut their deficit to a point in the early going. Bloomfield would use a 10-2 run to open up a 15-6 lead as Concordia scored two straight points to try and get a run going. This sparked an 11-3 run overall for the Clippers as Concordia trailed by only a point, 18-17. The Clippers continued their strong play and would tie the score at 21-21 following three unanswered points. Concordia was unable to complete the comeback in the set as the Bears ended the set on a 4-1 run to claim the final set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.

Junior Derilis Valerio (Perth Amboy, N.J.) led the offense for the Clippers with six kills while senior Jenny Martin (Simi Valley, Calif. ) had five kills and sophomore Camila Rabassa (Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico) finished with four kills. Junior Bianca Ortiz (Ponce, Puerto Rico) had a team-high 10 assists while senior Celine Arada (San Francisco, Calif.) and Martin each had 10 digs on the defensive end.
