Bloomfield, N.J. – The Clippers women's volleyball team took on Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division foe Bloomfield College on Tuesday evening. After taking the first two sets, Concordia allowed the Deacons to tie the match but a fifth set victory for the Clippers gave them a 3-2 win.
Concordia opened up the first set with five consecutive points to take an early lead. The Clippers opened up a double digit lead after a point gave them a 22-12 lead late in the set. Concordia would score three of the least four points to take a 25-16 opening set victory.
The second set would be a close battle in the early going as Bloomfield kept the game close until three unanswered points by the Clippers gave them a five point lead. From here Concordia would put the set away as they went on to take a 25-19 win and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Deacons would look to make a comeback in the match as they took 25-19 third set victory and a 25-21 fourth set win to send the match into a fifth and decisive set. In the final set the Clippers made a statement in the early going by taking a 7-2 advantage. Bloomfield would begin a comeback late in the set to trail by two points at 13-11 following four straight points. The Deacons were unable to complete their comeback as Concordia ended the set with two of the final three points to win 15-12 in the fifth set and take a 3-2 match victory.
Sophomore Leina Braga (Salvador, Brazil) led Concordia with 14 kills on the offensive end while senior Chelsea Zurcher (Crofton, Md.) added 12 kills. Junior Alicia Vogel (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded a season-high 40 assists while Braga recorded a match-high 15 digs on the defensive end.
The Clippers (3-12, 3-6 CACC) will return for their first of five consecutive home matches on Friday evening. Concordia will battle Dominican (N.Y.) in a CACC North Division matchup which will begin at 6pm in the Meyer Athletic Center.
