Volleyball Surges Past Owls 3-1
Bronxville, NY - Senior Cindy Eckard (Woodstock, VA) had 4 kills on an errorless hitting night to help the Clippers defeat the visiting Owls of Southern CT State University 3-1 last night in non-conference action at the Meyer Athletic center in Bronxville, NY. Eckard also had 5 blocks in the match. Game scores were 32-30, 33-31, 26-30 and 30-20.
In Game 1, down 29-26, the Clippers reeled off 4 straight points to take a 30-29. A kill by Marcia Hollingworth tied the score at 30-30. Concordia responded with a thunderous hit by junior Shashawna Ball (San Jose, CA) to go up by a point. Ball then went to the back row and served up the game point winner for the Clippers at 32-30.
In Game 2, the Owls again had game point in their hands, leading 29-24. Freshman Maddy Lorenz (Spokane, WA) pounded a kill to reduce the deficit to 29-25. Senior Amanda Westfall (Cedar City, UT) rotated back to the service line and served the next 5 points to give the Clippers a 30-29 lead. Lauren Coombs attacked the next ball for the Owls, getting the kill to tie the score at 30-30. Hollingsworth would put the Owls up 31-30 with with one of her 12 kills on the night. However, the Clippers would not be denied, as they would side-out and get the next 2 points to win game two 33-31.
Game 3 was again a close affair late in the contest. With the score tied 26-26, Ball had an attack error to put the Owls up 27-26. This game would prove to be different, as the Owls dug down defensively to score the next 3 points and close out the third game 30-26.
Game 4 started close, with neither team getting ahead by more than 2 points. Concordia led 13-11 and took control of the match with 6 consecutive points to lead 19-11. The Clippers attack led the way for the rest of the game, hitting .550 in the 4th game, to close out the match 30-20.
Lorenz led the Clippers with a match high 18 points. Lorenz also chipped in 11 digs. Senior Tiffany Edwards (Baytown, TX) added 12 kills and 9 digs. Freshman Amanda Byrd (Clarkston, MI) finished with a team high 14 digs.
For the Owls, Nekane Mendizabal led the offense with 13 kills and 14 digs. Hollingsworth had 12 kills. Robin Priest led all defenders with 18 digs for the match.
The Clippers conclude the 2007 season with a 13-13 overall
record and 2-7 in the East Coast Conference.
