Concordia Volleyball Adds Five New Recruits for 2007 Season
Bronxville, NY - Looking to improve on their 2006 season and East Coast Conference playoff berth, the Concordia College volleyball team will be adding five new players to the roster this upcoming season. Joining the Clippers in the fall will be outside hitters Maddy Lorenz and Shashawna Ball, libero Amanda Byrd, middle blocker Ariana Burns and defensive specialist Kaci Hill. "It should be a very exciting and very competitive season for us this year." says Head Coach Craig Boston. "With the talent that will be coming in this season and returning 5 starters from last year's team, I look for us have a great season and hopefully contend for an ECC title."
Maddy Lorenz comes to Concordia College from Joel E. Ferris High School in Spokane, WA. Lorenz led the Ferris HS to a playoff berth in her senior season, where the Saxons lost in the Greater Spokane League (GSL) District Playoffs. The 5'-11" outside hitter was voted to the GSL First Team. Lorenz was also a team captain and the team MVP for Ferris HS. Lorenz also plays outside hitter for the Spokane Storm 18U, one of the premiere girls volleyball clubs in the northwest region. "I'm extremely excited to be adding Maddy to our volleyball program." says Coach Boston. "Maddy should step in and make an immediate impact for our offense."
Shashawna Ball is a junior college transfer from San Jose Community College in San Jose, CA. Ball put down 191 kills and had 57 service aces for the Jaguars this past season. The 5'-7" outside hitter also was a juggernaut on defense as well, amassing over 200 digs on the season. Coach Boston states "Shashawna has played collegiate volleyball in the most competitive area in the country for our sport and has proven that she can be an asset to a team." Boston adds "Shashawna will be looked upon to put down a lot of kills in the next couple of years and be a productive force for our team."
Amanda Byrd will be anchoring the defense for the Clippers for the next four years. Byrd attends Clarkston High School in Clarkston, MI. "I am very happy to have Amanda playing libero for us for the next four years." says Coach Boston. "Her quickness on defense, competitive spirit and tremendously positive attitude will shore up our defense for years to come." At Clarkston HS, Byrd was a 2 year varsity starter and team captain this past season. The 5'-5" senior was named to the All-Tournament Team in the Walled Lake Central Tournament was voted Athlete of the Week in the Oakland Press and the Clarkston News. Byrd amassed a serving percentage of over 94%, with 38 aces and 1.69 aces per game for the Wolves. Byrd also totaled 377 digs in 64 games played this season, good for 5.9 digs per game. The senior also plays volleyball for USA Michigan 18-1, a top girls club program in Michigan that is well respected across the nation.
Ariana Burns arrives at Concordia College this fall as a middle blocker. Burns played varsity volleyball at Matignon High School in Matignon, MA. The 6'-2" senior was a 4 year varsity member and team captain this past season. "Ariana will be looked upon to give us an intimidating presence in the middle." says Coach Boston. "Once Ariana learns and develops our blocking technique, I feel she can be one of the most dominate middle blocker in our conference for the next four years."
Kaci Hill will add some depth for the Clippers this season on defense. Hill attended Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, NY. The 5-6" defensive specialist played 85 games for the Falcons and amassed 133 digs. Hill also had 46 service aces and 17 assists this past season. Coach Boston affirms, "Kaci will be a big bonus for us in the back row with her digging." "Kaci can also step in and be a consistent server for us, when needed."
The Clippers finished the 2006 season with a 10-17 record and
qualified for the East Coast Conference playoffs, where they were
defeated by the eventual conference champion and Elite Eight
participant, Dowling College. Concordia will kick-off the
2007 season in the Division II Women's Volleyball Showcase in
Fairfax, VA on August 24-25. The Clippers will open the tournament
against Lees McRae College on the 24th and will square
off the following day against the Braves of the University of North
Carolina at Pembroke and the Warriors of East Stroudsburg
University.
