SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Concordia Clippers women's tennis team, ranked 35th overall in NCAA Division II, battled No. 9 Academy of Art University in their NCAA Round of 16 match on Tuesday. Concordia would fall to the Urban Knights, 5-0, to end their run at the program's first-ever national championship.
Doubles play began with the No. 1 duo of sophomore Siri Victorsson (Stockholm, Sweden) and freshman Angelica Karlsson Hantzis (Fuengirola, Malaga, Spain) falling to the 9th-ranked duo in the nation, Klara Thell-Lenntorp and Alma Thell-Lenntorp, 8-2. The No. 3 duo of freshman Josefina Torres Martin (Miami, Fla.) and junior Tadi Mrewa (East London, South Africa) would also drop an 8-2 decision to Paula Alcantara and Monika Stanikova. Academy of Art completed the sweep in doubles play as the No. 2 duo of junior Kristel Kalm (Stockholm, Sweden) and freshman Franziska Putschbach (Moenchweiler, Germany) were upended 8-1 against Taisiia Andrieieva and Maria Andrisani.
Putschbach would fall 6-0, 6-0 in her No. 6 match against Alcantara as Mrewa was upended 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 match against Alma Thell-Lenntorp as the Urban Knights took the match, 5-0. The remaining matches would go unfinished.
