HAINES CITY, Fla. - The Concordia Clippers women's tennis team kicked off their spring schedule on Monday morning with a neutral site match against the Mavericks of Minnesota State. Concordia looked to be in mid-season form as the Clippers came away with the 8-1 victory.
In doubles action the No. 3 duo of junior Tadi Mrewa (East London, South Africa) and freshman Franziska Putschbach (Moenchweiler, Germany) began with an 8-1 win over Valerie Bresnahan and Tyanna Washa. Freshman Josefina Torres Martin (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Angelica Karlsson Hantzis (Fuengirola, Malaga, Spain) followed in their No. 2 match with an 8-2 victory against Kylie DeWees and Nina Risselman to give Concordia a 2-0 advantage. The Clippers completed the sweep in doubles play as the No. 1 duo of junior Kristel Kalm (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Siri Victorsson (Stockholm, Sweden) battled their way to an 8-5 win over Erin Streeter and Monika Ryan.
Karlsson Hantzis would earn a 6-1, retired win against DeWees in the No. 3 match to begin singles play. Torres Martin followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in her No. 4 match against Camila Ojeda while Mrewa defeated Risselman in the No. 5 match 6-0, 6-3. Kalm and Victorsson worked for their respective singles wins as Kalm was victorious in the No. 2 match 7-6 (3), 6-1 against Ryan and Victorsson battled back against Streeter 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6) in her No. 1 match. The lone defeat for Concordia came in the No. 6 match as freshman Katrina Sta Cruz (Las Vegas, Nev.) dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Washa.
The Clippers (11-2) will return to action tomorrow morning to take on Southern Indiana at 10 a.m.
