BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Concordia College women's tennis team returned to the Meyers Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon to host Caldwell University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match. The Clippers would earn the 9-0 sweep against the Cougars as Concordia remains undefeated this fall.
The No. 3 duo of junior Tadi Mrewa (East London, South Africa) and freshman Franziska Putschbach (Moenchweiler, Germany) began the match with an 8-0 win against Claudia Romano and Amy Tang as the No. 2 duo of freshman Josefina Torres Martin (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Angelica Karlsson Hantzis (Fuengirola, Malaga, Spain) followed shortly thereafter with an 8-1 victory against Shannon Donaldson and Janis Jimenez. The No. 1 match would be a closely contested battle as the duo of junior Kristel Kalm (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Siri Victorsson (Stockholm, Sweden) would come away with the 8-6 win against Rebecca Ryan and Valeria Otarola to give the Clippers a 3-0 lead going into singles play.
Mrewa earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory in her No. 5 match against Romano as did Victorsson in her No. 1 match against Otarola. Freshman Katrina Sta Cruz (Las Vegas, Nev.) would follow with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Tang in the No. 6 match while Putschbach earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 4 match against Donaldson. Kalm was victorious against Jimenez in the No. 5 match 6-1, 6-3 as Torres Martin concluded the match with a 7-6 (1), 6-0 win over Ryan in the No. 2 match to give Concordia the 9-0 sweep.
The Clippers (4-0, 4-0 CACC) will next participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regionals in Flushing, N.Y. beginning on Friday. The four-day event will be co-hosted by Adelphi and Queens (N.Y.).
