BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Concordia Clippers women's tennis program hosted Jefferson University for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match on Saturday afternoon. Concordia would earn a victory in their season opener as the Clippers topped the Rams, 6-3.
Doubles action began the match as the No. 3 duo of junior Tadi Mrewa (East London, South Africa) and freshman Franziska Putschbach (Moenchweiler, Germany) earned an 8-1 win over Eryn Nguyen and Emily Zygmunt. Freshman Josefina Torres Martin (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Angelica Karlsson Hantzis (Fuengirola, Malaga, Spain) also would earn a victory in their match as the duo defeated Usha Baublitz and Millie Coombes in the No. 2 match, 8-3. Jefferson managed to grab one doubles win as Marta Yevstakhevych and Lauren Candia earned a 9-8 (5) victory against junior Kristel Kalm (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Siri Victorsson (Stockholm, Sweden) in the No. 1 match.
With a 2-1 lead going into singles play, Concordia would look to put the match away as Kalm defeated Baublitz in the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-3. Victorsson would also come out victorious in her No. 1 match as she topped Yevstakhevych 9-6 (6), 6-3. Karlsson would take the first set in her No. 2 match against Candia, 6-1, but her opponent took the next two sets 6-4, 6-3 to give Jefferson their second win of the day.
The Rams' final victory came in the No. 4 match as Coombes would defeat Torres Martin 6-0, 7-5. Mrewa took her No. 6 match with ease 6-0, 6-1 against Lindsey McDonough and Putschbach followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Nguyen in the No. 5 match as the Clippers captured the 6-3 team victory.
Concordia (1-0, 1-0 CACC) will next visit Holy Family University next Saturday in a CACC match beginning at 11 a.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
