No. 35 Concordia Edges Stonehill in First Round of NCAA Championship, 5-3

Easton, MA – The thirty-fifth ranked Concordia College Clippers women's tennis team captured a 5-3 victory over Stonehill College at the first round of the NCAA Championship on Monday afternoon. The Clippers survived a comeback effort by the Skyhawks to advance to the second round match.

Maria Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia) and Camilla Gomes Xavier (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) got the match started with an 8-2 victory in the No. 3 doubles match. An 8-4 win in the No. 2 match by Ana S.O. Mendes (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) and Juliana Frey (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) followed shortly thereafter to give Concordia a 2-0 overall lead. Stonehill would take the No. 1 singles match with an 8-5 win as the duo of Yuliya Plevako (Astana, Kazakhstan) and Clara Catanzano (Sete, France) could not come away with the victory for the Clippers.

In singles play, Plevako easily took a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 match to give Concordia a 3-1 advantage. The Skyhawks responded with victories at the No. 6 and No. 5 matches as Xavier and Ortiz both fell 6-2, 6-2 to tie the match at 3-3.

Mendes put the Clippers back on top with a 7-5, 6-1 win in the No. 2 match. With only two matches remaining Concordia needed just one more victory to advance. Catanzano would provide the win for the Clippers in the No. 3 match as she battled her way to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

Concordia (11-1, 8-0 CACC) will be back on the court tomorrow morning to face the top-seeded Queens College Knights at 11am. The action will take place back at Stonehill College with the victor clinching a spot for the Round of 16 in Louisville, KY.
