Clippers Womens Tennis Ranked #2 in the East Region
Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College Women's Tennis team was recently ranked second in the East Region and 33rd in the ITA/NCAA Division II by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). This ranking is up eight spots since May. The Clippers finished the fall season with a record of 13-1 overall and an 8-0 record in their new conference, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). The Clippers only loss came from Queens College, who took the top slot in the region.
Not only was the team ranked in the region and nationally but several players were ranked as well.
Ola Roberts, a junior from Bucharest, Romania, was recently named
Rookie of the Year by the CACC is ranked 2nd in the East
Region by the ITA. Roberts is undefeated in regular season
singles play and has a 5-1 tournament record so far this
year. Roberts also earned a spot on the All-CACC Women's
Tennis team, Player of the Week, Rookie of the Week, and an
Honorable Mention of the Week from the CACC.
Cristina Oliveira, a senior from Porto Alegre, Brazil, was named as
the CACC Player of the Year and is ranked 3rd in the
East Region right behind Roberts. Oliveira is also undefeated
in regular season singles play and has a 4-1 tournament record this
year. Oliveira earned a spot on the All-CACC Women's Tennis
team and three Player of the Week honors from the CACC.
Ola Roberts and Christina Oliveira teamed up in doubles play and were ranked 2nd in the East Region and 20th in the Nation by the ITA. Roberts and Oliveira dropped only one doubles match in regular season play. They were the ITA East Regional "A" Bracket winners and finished 5th in the ITA National tournament in Alabama.
Yuliya Plevako, a freshman from Astana, Kazakhstan, was ranked
7th in the East Region. Plevako is 13-1 in singles
play this season so far with a 3-1 tournament record. Plevako
has earned a spot on the All-CACC Women's Tennis Team, was named
Rookie of the Week three times and Player of the Week once from the
CACC. She also helped lead the Clippers to their first CACC
Championship title with two 6-0; 6-0 performances in the semifinals
against Philadelphia University and then again in the Championship
match against Goldey-Beacom College.
Yuliya Plevako teamed up with Maria Ortiz in doubles as they were ranked 4th in the East Region by the ITA. The pair was perfect in doubles play in the regular season with a 12-0 record.
Adeline Brennan was also named to the All-CACC Women's Tennis team while Maria Ortiz earned an honorable mention from the CACC.
"This is a great honor for the team to be ranked 2nd in the East Region. It is also wonderful that we have three girls ranked in the top 10 in the region in singles and two of the doubles teams in the top 5 in the region and one of those doubles teams ranked nationally. I am also very happy that the CACC recognized Cristina and Ola as Player and Rookie of the Year respectively and along with them Yuliya, Adeline, and Maria were also recognized on the All-CACC team," states Coach Simunyola.
The next rankings for Women's Tennis will come out in the beginning of March 2010.
