Women's Tennis Defeats Queens 5-4
Bronxville, NY - Senior Celise Sesanker (Scarborough, Trinidad & Tobago) won both singles and doubles matches to help the Clippers defeat the defending East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Tournament Champions, the Knights of Queens College, 5-4 yesterday at the Meyers Tennis Center in Bronxville, NY.
The Clippers started out by taking two of the three doubles flights. Seniors Somadi Druker (Capetown, South Africa) and Sesanker defeated Alyssa Morra and Maria Mendes at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-2. Sophomore Adeline Brennan (Toms River, NJ) and junior Tita Kiss (Stamford, CT) were defeated at No. 3 doubles 8-3 by Jessie Franklin and Taylor Barber. The last doubles match went down to the wire with junior Cristina Oliveira (Porto Allegre, Brazil) and freshman Maria Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia) squeaking out a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles to give the Clippers a 2-1 advantage going into the singles portion of the match.
In singles play, the Clippers were able to take the first 3 flights to capture the match. Oliveira defeated Laura Mocodeanu 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Druker topped Mendes at No. 2 singles 7-5, 6-2 and Sesanker beat Barber 6-1, 6-1.
The Clippers sit alone at the top of the East Coast Conference with a perfect 4-0 overall and conference record. The Knights endure their first loss and fall to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the East Coast Conference.
Concordia will travel to Philadelphia, PA on Sunday, September 28th to face the Rams of Philadelphia University in a non-conference match-up. First serve is set for 12:00 PM.
