Women's Tennis Headed to Round of 16

Waltham, MA - The Concordia College women's tennis team swept their way into the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship Round of 16 with a 5-0 win over Philadelphia University on Friday and a 5-0 victory against Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday at Bentley University in Waltham, MA.

In the first round, Concordia went up 3-0 against the Rams of Philadelphia University on Friday after sweeping doubles play. Seniors Somadi Druker (Capetown, South Africa) and Celise Sesanker (Scarborough, Trinidad & Tobago) won a close 8-6 decision over Adriana and Daniela Rodriguez at No. 1 doubles. Junior Cristina Oliveira (Porto Allegre, Brazil) and freshman Maria Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia) won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles over Stephanie Reinke and Christina Brzozowski. At No. 3 doubles, the duo of sophomore Adeline Brennan (Toms River, NJ) and junior Tita Kiss (Stamford, CT) took care of Brittany Villa and Sarah Harris by a score of 8-1.

With a 3-0 lead in the race to 5 points, Oliveira blanked A. Rodriguez at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Needing just one more victory to claim the match, Ortiz disposed of Villa 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to send the Clippers on to the second round.

On Saturday, the Clippers began the match against Southern New Hampshire just as they had the previous day, by sweeping all three doubles points. Druker and Sesanker defeated Amber Chandronnait and Catalina Echeverry 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Oliveira and Ortiz soundly won their match at No. 2 doubles over Lauren Nigrelli and Alison Waring 8-1 and Brennan and Kiss won by the identical 8-1 score over Courtney Blais and Meghan Welch at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Sesanker defeated Nigrelli 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 position and Ortiz won 6-1, 6-0 against Blais to send the Clippers to the NCAA Round of 16.

The Clippers improve to 16-2 on the season.

The NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship Round of 16 will begin on Wednesday, May 13th at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Spring, FL. Concordia will face the Central Region #2 bracket winner, which pits the Mavericks of Mesa State College against the Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
