Clippers take first game of the season with a 4-2 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas
The Clippers opened their season at St. Thomas Aquinas
College. A few corner kicks opened the game up from each team
but it was the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas that broke open the
scoring. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into
the game.
The Clippers turned right around after that and headed straight into attack mode. With shots coming from Susan Valencia and new comer Oumou Toure the Spartans net area was becoming very busy. A little over 23 minutes into the game Toure kicked the ball to Valencia who then shot the ball straight past the Spartans diving goalkeeper to the tie the game up. At the end of the first half the score was tied at 1-1.
The second half of the game started off with a bang for the Clippers as Jennifer Stefankiewicz kicked the ball from the side of the 18 passed the Spartans keeper to push the Clippers into the lead for the first time of the game. Less than twenty minutes later the Spartans tied the game up.
In the treacherous time after goals the Clippers went back to the offensive and with a long ball pass from Toure to Bridgitte McCalla and the Clippers regained the lead. McCalla then turned around a few minutes later rebounded a ball off the keeper to notch the fourth and final goal for the Clippers. The Spartans attempted to score again and were close with a couple of corner kick opportunities but time ran out and the Clippers took the game 4-2.
The Clippers head to LeMoyne College and Southern New Hampshire for the weekend.
