Late Goals Lift Mavericks Past Clippers 4-2

Bronxville, NY - Sophomore Rachel Woodland (Woking, England) scored her first goal of the season, but the Clippers allowed two late goals in falling to the Mavericks of Mercy College 4-2 yesterday at Holtdorf Soccer Field in Bronxville, NY.

Mercy opened the scoring in the 22nd minute on a goal by Ashley Borofsky. The goal came on a free kick from 25 yards out that sailed past goalkeeper Mary Darbee (Patchogue, NY) to the upper right corner of the net. The Clippers would respond ten minutes later on a goal by senior Maura Torres (Queens, NY) off of a penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1. It was the team leading 6th goal for Torres this season.

In the second half, Mercy took the lead on a shot from Delmara Reece in the 51st minute right in front of the goal off of a corner kick to claim a 2-1 lead. Concordia would answer and tie the game at 2-2 in the 76th minute on Woodland's goal, a left-footed blast from 25 yards out that sailed over the Mavericks goalkeeper.

Mercy would take the lead for good on a goal by Reece two minutes later to take a 3-2 lead and would put the game away in the 87th minute on a penalty kick by Reece, her third goal of the game.

Darbee played a full 90:00 minutes in goal for Concordia, registering 1 save and allowing 4 goals. For Mercy College, Megan McKim played the first half in goal, allowing 1 goal and finishing with 3 saves. Catherine Kowalski minded the net for Mercy in the second half, allowing a goal getting 2 saves.

The loss drops Concordia to 0-11 overall and 0-6 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy College improves to 1-7 overall and 1-6 in the East Coast Conference.

The Clippers will host the Golden Lions of Dowling College on Saturday, October 20th at Holtdorf Soccer Field. The action gets underway at 12:00 PM
