Koch's 19 Points leads Clippers to 72-69 Win

Bronxville, NY - Freshman Kayla Koch (Kings Park, NY) scored a team high 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds to lead the Clippers to a 72-69 victory over the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College last night at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. The win snaps a 4-game losing streak and improves the Clippers record to 4-20 overall and 2-13 in the East Coast Conference. St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 7-17 overall and 4-11 in the East Coast Conference.

Junior Brittany Binnie (Middletown, NY) shot 12 for 15 (80%) from the free throw line in scoring 16 points for the Clippers. Binnie also had a game high 6 assists and 4 rebounds. Sophomore Kasey Grisanti (Bronx, NY) finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks, while freshman Jessica Zielske (Boca Raton, FL) chipped in 8 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Briana Sloper, who notched 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Sylvia Davis scored 10 points and dished out 5 assists. Theresa Dowling added 9 points and 5 rebounds.

The Clippers led throughout the game, opening a 14-7 lead midway through the first half. Two free throws by Binnie gave the Clippers their largest lead of the first half, a 27-17 advantage with just over 6 minutes left. The Spartans closed out on a 10-4 run to trail at the half by a score of 31-27.

In the second half, the Clippers were able to extend the lead to 11 points on another pair of free throws by Binnie at the 14:53 mark. Concordia took their largest lead of the game, a 68-53 lead with 3 minutes left to play. Koch connected on the back end of a pair of free throws, giving Concordia a 71-59 lead with just over a minute left. The Spartans made it interesting in the final seconds by out scoring the Clippers 10-1 down the stretch to fall by a 72-69 final score.

Concordia will next host the Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday, February 21st at the Meyer Athletic Center. The Mavericks defeated the Clippers 103-76 in Dobbs Ferry on January 21st. Grisanti and Koch led the Clippers with 14 points and 13 points, respectively, in that contest. The game will commence at 1:00 PM.
