Women's Basketball Falls to NYIT 71-62
Old Westbury, NY - Despite having four players scoring in double digits, the Concordia College women's basketball team lost their East Coast Conference opener to the Bears of NYIT 71-62 last night in Old Westbury, NY.
The Clippers were led by junior Dana Rommel (Staten Island, NY), who finished with a team high 16 points and 10 rebounds. It was the fourth game in a row that Rommel has led the Clippers in scoring. Sophomore Amanda Eggink (Red Hook, NY) notched her first double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds, both season highs.
The Bears broke the game open in the first half by using a 13-0 scoring run to turn a 19-19 battle into a 32-19 Bear advantage with 3:00 left in the first half. A pair of free throws by sophomore Kasey Grisanti (Bronx, NY) stopped the Bear scoring run. Grisanti finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Both teams traded points the rest of the way and NYIT took a 38-25 lead into the locker room at the half.
The second half saw the Clippers fight back and chip away at the NYIT lead. The Bears held their largest lead of the game, 42-27 with 17:08 remaining. That's when Concordia turned up the pace and went on a scoring run of their own. Sophomore Bonnie DeFina (Maspeth, NY) hit a jumper to cap a 20-6 scoring run and pull the Clippers to within a point at 48-47 with just under 10:00 left.
The Bears led 58-56 with 3:33 remaining and scored the next 8 points of the game to take command and lead 66-56 with 69 seconds left.
Freshman Kayla Koch (Kings Park, NY) contributed 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists for the Clippers. DeFina added 8 points and 5 rebounds. Junior Gianna Zonghetti (Garrison, NY) chipped in 3 points and 4 rebounds.
For the Bears, Madison Robertson finished wit ha game high 17 points and 7 rebounds. Jenny Eriksson had 13 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Mary Sbrissa finished wit ha double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 13 rebounds, while Brittany Almonte chipped in 11 points and 6 rebounds.
The Clippers fall to 2-5 overall with the loss and 0-1 in the East Coast Conference. NYIT picks up their first win of the year to improve to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
Concordia will look to rebound on Saturday, December 6th, as they host the Lions of Molloy College at the Meyer Athletic Center. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
