Clippers End Skid by Defeating Bears 77-62
Bronxville, NY - Freshman Kayla Koch (Kings Park, NY) netted 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals as the Clippers ended a 13 game losing streak by downing the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology 77-62 yesterday at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. The Clippers last won on November 24, 2008 against Briarcliffe College at the Meyer Athletic Center.
Koch, who has played brilliantly since inserted into the starting line-up, has led Concordia in scoring in 4 straight games and is now the second leading scorer on the team with 8.1 points per game. Sophomore Kasey Grisanti (Bronx, NY) finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds and a season high 6 blocks and junior Dana Rommel (Staten Island, NY) added 13 points and 5 rebounds. Junior Brittany Binnie (Middletown, NY) and sophomore Amanda Eggink (Red Hook, NY) each chipped in 11 points. Binnie also dished out 9 assists and had 5 steals.
The Clippers controlled the action early and led 15-4 midway through the first half. A pair of foul shots by Grisanti gave the Clippers their largest lead of the half, a 35-22 advantage with 3:15 left to play. NYIT would respond with a 7-1 scoring run to cut the deficit to 7 points. But in the closing second of the first half, Koch collected a steal, raced down the court and connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Clippers a 39-29 lead.
Concordia opened the second half on a 7-2 scoring run to push the lead to 15 points. Rommel connected on the front end of a pair of foul shots to give the Clippers their largest lead of the game at 57-35 with 11:41 remaining.
The Bears would not go away quietly as they crept back into the game by outsoring the Clippers 15-2 over the next 8 minutes to make it a 59-50 ball game with under 4 minutes left. But Concordia remained composed and hit crucial foul shots over the next few minutes to take a 70-55 lead with just over a minute left in the game.
For NYIT, Latoya Anderson finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds and Torlanda Poindexter added 12 points and 5 rebounds. Lauren Caggiano and Madison Robertson each chipped in 8 points.
The win improves the Clippers to 3-16 overall and 1-9 in the East Coast Conference. The Bears fall to 2-17 on the year and 1-9 in conference play.
The Clippers look to make it two in a row on Wednesday, February 4th, as they travel to Rockville Centre, NY to take on the Lions of Molloy College in an ECC battle. The Lions defeated Concordia 92-72 earlier this season at the Meyer Athletic Center. The action begins at 5:00 PM.
