Slow First Half Sinks Clippers 89-61
Garden City, NY - The Concordia College women's basketball team lost an East Coast Conference match-up to the Adelphi University Panthers yesterday 89-61 in Garden City, NY. Concordia has lost 11 straight games and falls to 2-14 overall and 0-8 in the East Coast Conference. Adelphi improves to 9-8 on the season and 6-2 in conference play.
The Clippers were led by freshman Kayla Koch (Kings Park, NY), who was a rebound away from her first double-double. Koch finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in 27 minutes of action. Koch shot a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Sophomore Bonnie DeFina (Maspeth, NY) came off the bench to score 12 points and sophomore Kasey Grisanti (Bronx, NY) added 11 points and 5 rebounds. Juniors Gianna Zonghetti (Garrison, NY) and Brittany Binnie (Middletown, NY) 9 points and 6 points, respectively. Binnie also collected 6 rebounds for the Clippers.
Concordia shot a season low 4 for 28 (14.3%) in the first half, including 1 for 8 (12.5%) from three point range. The Clipper defense allowed the Panthers to shoot 54.3% (19 for 35) from the floor in the first half. Adelphi used a 21-1 scoring run to turn a 5-3 lead into a 26-4 lead with just over 7 minutes in the half. Ashley Caiafa nailed a 3-pointer in the final second of the half to give the Panthers a 46-17 lead going into the locker room. Adelphi out rebounded the Clippers 30-13 in the opening half.
Caiafa led Adelphi with a game high 20 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. Serita Lee finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists, while Jasmine Travers had 11 points and 5 assists. Theresa Foley, Caitlin Wetmore and Hunter Marek each chipped in 8 points for the Panthers.
Concordia will look to end their losing streak on Monday, January 26th as they host the Golden Falcons of Felician College at the Meyer Athletic Center. The Clippers defeated Felician earlier this season 75-71 in Rutherford, NJ. The game will begin at 7:00 PM.
