Mercy Tops Clippers 66-62

Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College women's basketball team was defeated by the Mavericks of Mercy College 66-62 last night at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. Freshman Amanda Eggink (Red Hook, NY) led the way for the Clippers with a team high 14 points and 8 rebounds. Junior Shari Cordero (Bronx, NY) finished with her first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Freshman Bonnie DeFina (Maspeth, NY) was perfect 8-8 from the free throw line in finishing with 10 points for the Clippers.

 

 

For the Mavericks, Delmara Reece had a monster game, registering a game high 19 points and 24 rebounds. Reece leads the ECC in rebounds at 13.2 per game. Ashley Finnegan notched a double-double as well, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Guard Christina Baxter was 2 rebounds short of a triple-double, finishing with 14 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds for the Mavericks.

The Clippers trailed from the onset of the game and took their first lead on a baseline jumper by Cordero, putting the Clippers ahead 40-39 with 17:04 left in the second half. Mercy would take back the lead for good at the 10:20 mark on a jumper by Finnegan making the score 45-44. The Mavericks would increase to 55-46 the lead thanks to a 10-2 scoring run. Baxter would score 7 of those 10 points. Concordia was down 64-57 with under a minute to play when Eggink sank a shot to cut the deficit to 5 points. DeFina was fouled while attempting a 3-point shot and calmly sank all 3 free throws to cut the Mercy lead to 64-62 with 7 seconds left. The Clippers were forced to foul and Baxter hit her final two free throw to make the final score 66-62.

The loss drops the Clippers overall record to 1-18 and 1-13 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy College improves to 6-14 overall and 6-8 in the East Coast Conference.

Concordia will continue with their home stand on Saturday, February 9th, as they host the Golden Lions of Dowling College at the Meyer Athletic Center. The Golden Lions defeated the Clippers 84-59 earlier this season on December 14, 2007 in Oakdale, NY. The game will begin at 1:00 PM.
