Women's Basketball Falls to Panthers 73-62

Bronxville, NY - Freshman Bonnie DeFina (Maspeth, NY) scored a team high 13 points and grabbed 3 rebounds in a losing effort against the Panthers of Adelphi University 73-62 today at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. DeFina scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half and shot 4-7 (57%) for the game. Sophomore Dana Romel (Staten Island, NY) was a rebound short of a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. Rommel also collected 4 steals and 2 assists. Junior Shari Cordero (Bronx, NY) and sophomore Gianna Zonghetti (Garrison, NY) each finished with 10 points. Cordero also had 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

For Adelphi, Gianna Smith led all scorers with 26 points, while also finishing with 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Smith was efficient from the floor, shooting 8-13 (62%) and 10-12 (83%) from the free throw line. Lisa Manetta added 15 points and 5 rebounds and Serita Lee tallied a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Mary Lepore chipped in 6 points and 10 rebounds.

The Clippers controlled the action early in the game, racing out to a 14-5 lead in the first ten minutes of play. Concordia would obtain their largest lead of the game at 24-9 with two foul shots by DeFina, her last points of the first half. Adelphi would respond by closing out the remaining 05:28 outscoring the Clippers 18-6 to cut the Clipper lead to 30-27 at the half.

In the second half, it was a see-saw battle early on, as both teams traded baskets back and forth. A jumper by Smith put Adelphi ahead 43-42 at the 13:14 mark. Smith would score 18 of her game high 26 points in the second half. The Panthers would increase the lead to 10 points at 59-49 on a jumper by Jasmine Travers, who finished with 7 points. A basket by freshman Amanda Eggink (Red Hook, NY), who finished with 7 points and 7 rebounds, and 4 straight points by Rommel cut the deficit to 59-55 with 03:30 remaining. That would be the closest the Clippers would get, as Adelphi outscored Concordia 14-7 down the stretch to finish the game.

With the loss, the Clippers fall to 1-17 overall and 1-12 in the East Coast Conference. Adelphi improves to 10-10 overall and 8-5 in the East Coast Conference.

The Clippers will look to bounce back on Wednesday, February 6th, as they host the Mavericks of Mercy College.  Earlier this season, the Mavericks squeaked by the Clippers 75-73 on December 8th in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
