Bears Slip by Clippers 75-72
Bronxville, NY - Despite a season high 22 points from sophomore Dana Rommel (Staten Island, NY), the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology came away with a narrow 75-72 victory over the Clippers yesterday at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. The 22 points by Rommel eclipses the previous season high of 19 points, which came against NYIT earlier this season back on January 9th. Sophomore Brittany Binnie (Middletown, NY) also came away with a season high, scoring 17 points and adding 5 assists. Binnie was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Freshman Amanda Eggink (Red Hook, NY) added 10 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals for the Clippers and senior Danielle Bacon (Levittown, NY) and freshman Kasey Grisanti (Bronx, NY) each chipped in 6 points. Junior Shari Cordero (Bronx, NY) chipped in 5 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.
For the Bears, Freda Elston led 6 players in double figures with 13 points. Emily Bolling, Brittany Almonte and Brittany Smith each finished with 12 points, while Lauren Caggiano and Madison Robertson both chipped in 10 points. Smith led NYIT in rebounds with 14 boards and Caggiano added 10 rebounds. Bolling and Almonte each had a team high 5 assists for the Bears.
The Clippers were down 39-36 at the half, but scored the first 6 points of the second half to take a 42-39 lead at the 17:07 mark. The game would see-saw back and forth over the next 11 minutes of play, with several lead changes and neither team gaining more than a 6 point advantage. A jumper by Robertson put the Bears up 70-65 with 02:43 left to play. Binnie answered with a shot of her own to cut the deficit to 3 points. NYIT would connect on a couple of free throws to push the lead up to 72-67 with 40 seconds remaining. Rommel hit a big 3-pointer on the other end with 33 seconds left. Elston made 1 of 2 free throws and Smith connected on both of her free throws to push the lead back up to 5 points. Grisanti made a shot with 10 seconds left to cut the Clipper deficit to 3 points at 75-72. On the ensuing Bear possession, the Clippers got a steal and managed to get a couple of 3-point shots off to try to tie the game, but both shots were off the mark as the score remained 75-72.
The loss drops the Clippers record to 2-21 overall and 1-16 in the East Coast Conference. The Bears improve to 6-17 overall and 4-12 in the East Coast Conference.
