Skyhawks Soar Past Clippers 83-37
Worcester, MA - The Concordia College women's basketball team dropped their season opener to the Skyhawks of Stonehill College 83-37 yesterday in the Marriott Courtyard Classic at Assumption College in Worcester, MA.
The Clippers were led by senior Danielle Bacon (Levittown, NY), who scored 8 points on 3 of 4 shooting from the floor. Sophomores Dana Rommel (Staten ISland, NY) and Brittany Binnie (Middletown, NY) each scored 7 points for Concordia and Danielle McLaughlin (Staten Island, NY) chipped in 6 points.
The Clippers led 8-7 early on in the game, as Bacon and McLaughlin each connected on 3-point jumpers. Thats when the Skyhawks took control with a 22-point scoring run to lead 29-8 with just over 9 minutes remaining in the first half. A lay-up by Gianna Zonghetti (Garrison, NY) stopped the scoring run to cut the Skyhawk lead to 29-10, however, Stonehill would close out the half outscoring Concordia 14-6 to take a 43-16 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Clippers defense came on strong, forcing a few turnovers as Concordia cut the deficit to 48-30 on a 3-pointer by Rommel with 15:22 left. Stonehill would answer with a 25-3 scoring run to take control of the game with a 73-33 lead with over 7 minutes remaining.
For Stonehill, Kristen McWhirter led all scorers with 16 points on 6 for 9 shooting from the floor. Megan Methven had 15 points and Kelsey Simonds chipped in 11 points. McWhirter and Bethany Tighe both pulled down a game high 8 rebounds and Erika Stupinski had 6 assists.
Concordia will continue play in the Marriott Courtyard Classic
by taking on the host Greyhouns of Assumption College on Saturday,
November 17th. The Greyhounds defeated fellow ECC member Molloy
College 76-61 in the second game of the day yesterday. The action
will tip-off at 3:30 PM.
