Clippers Break into Win Column with 61-59 Victory Over STAC

Sparkill, NY - Sophomore Dana Rommel (Staten Island, NY) scored a team high 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead the Clippers to their first win of the season, a 61-59 win over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College last night at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium in Sparkill, NY. Rommel played 34 minutes for the Clippers and shot 75% (6-8) from the floor and also collected 2 steals. Freshman Bonnie DeFina (Maspeth, NY) also had a good shooting night, going 5-7 (71%) in scoring 13 points. DeFina was 3-4 (75%) from 3-point range in the game. Junior Shari Cordero (Bronx, NY) scored 10 points and pulled down 5 rebounds. Freshman Amanda Eggink (Red Hook, NY) finished with a season high 11 rebounds, to go along with 6 points, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Sophomore Brittany Binnie (Middletown, NY) led Concordia in assists with 10 helpers.

For the Spartans, Takiyah Ingram had a game high 19 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 9 steals. Theresa Dowling finished with 13 points and Corrine Albrecht had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Erika Ostrove led St. Thomas Aquinas with 11 rebounds and had a team high 5 assists.

The Clippers faced their largest deficit of the second half when Raven Brinkley connected on two foul shots to give the Spartans a 46-35 lead mid-way through the final period. The Clippers scored the next 12 points, punctuated by DeFina hitting two straight 3-pointers to give Concordia a 47-46 lead. DeFina would nail her third 3-pointer with 02:47 left in the game to put the Clippers ahead for good 59-56. Freshman Kasey Grisanti (Bronx, NY) made two free throws in the closing minutes to ice the game for Concordia.

With the win, the Clippers improve to 1-16 overall and 1-11 in the East Coast Conference. St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 6-12 overall and 5-6 in the East Coast Conference.

The Clippers will begin a 7-game home stand beginning Saturday, February 2^nd, as they will face the Panthers of Adelphi University. The Panthers clawed the Clippers earlier this season 85-36 in Garden City, NY back on December 5^th. The action will begin at 1:00 PM.
