Chargers Surge Past Clippers 79-28
West Haven, CT - The Concordia College women's basketball team was defeated this afternoon by the Chargers of the University of New Haven 79-28 at Charger Gymnasium in West Haven, CT. The loss drops the Clippers record to 0-16 overall and 0-11 in the East Coast Conference. New Haven improves to 11-7 overall and a perfect 11-0 in the East Coast Conference.
Sophomore Dana Rommel (Staten Island, NY) netted a team high 14 points, exactly half of the Clipper points. Rommel also finished with a team high 8 rebounds. It was the fourth time this season that Rommel has led Concordia in scoring and rebounding in the same game. Junior Shari Cordero (Bronx, NY) and sophomore Brittany Binnie (Middletown, NY) each chipped in 4 points and 3 rebounds.
For the Chargers, all 13 players scored at least 2 points, led by Natasha Pierre-Louis, who scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Lauren Hood had 10 points and Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty finished with 9 points and 6 rebounds. Helin Marte added 6 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for the Chargers.
The Chargers took control of the game in the first half, using a 21-0 scoring run to increase a 12-8 lead to a 33-8 advantage with 08:09 remaining in the opening half. A lay-up by Rommel stopped the run by New Haven to make the score 33-10. The Clippers were outscored 22-8 over the last 07:41 to go into the locker room down 55-18.
In the second half, neither team lit-up the scoreboard, as New Haven outscored the Clippers 24-10. Concordia scored a season low 28 points, surpassing the previous low of 33 points at Assumption College on November 17, 2007.
The Clippers will look to pick-up their initial win of the
season on Wednesday, January 30th, as they travel to Sparkill, NY
to face the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans. Earlier this
season, the Spartans defeated the Clippers 77-60 at the Meyer
Athletic Center back on December 1, 2007. Tip-off is set for 5:30
PM.
