Purple Knights Defeat Clippers 78-65
Bronxville, NY - Senior Danielle Bacon (Levittown, NY) scored a season high 15 points in a losing effort in the Clippers 78-65 loss to the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights last night at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY.
Bacon shot 7-13 (54%) from the floor and also had 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Sophomore Dana Rommel (Staten Island, NY) finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Sophomore Brittany Binnie (Middletown, NY) added 12 points and freshman Amanda Eggink (Red Hook, NY) chipped in 8 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore Gianna Zonghetti (Garrison, NY) had a season high 10 rebounds to go along with 4 assists, 2 points and 2 steals.
For the Purple Knights, Shannon Malone finished with a double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Malone was 10-13 (77%) shooting from the floor for the game. Sidney Parsons finished with 18 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Parsons was also efficient shooting from the floor, going 7-10 (70%) and 3-4 (75%) from 3-point range.
The Clippers controlled the action in the early stages, racing out to a 16-9 lead with Rommel scoring 10 of those points. Bridgeport would respond, as Malone and Parsons combined for 10 unanswered points to give the Purple Knights a 19-16 lead with 12:47 remaining in the opening half. Both teams would battle and trade baskets over the next 10 minutes, as there would be 4 ties and 2 lead changes over the next 9 minutes of play. Sophomore Danielle McLaughlin (Staten Island, NY) swished a jumped to give Concordia a 31-30 lead, however, the Purple Knights would close out the last 02:40 with 8 points to take a 38-31 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Rommel and Eggink scored the first 6 points to bring the Clippers to within a point at 38-37 at the 18:17 mark on the clock. That would be the closest the Clippers would get the rest of the game, as Bridgeport went on an 18-7 scoring run over the next 6 minutes to take a 56-44 lead. A 3-pointer by freshman Kasey Grisanti (Bronx, NY) cut the Clipper deficit to single digits and a pair of free throws by Zonghetti made the score 65-58 with 03:37 left in the game. However, the Purple Knights made the 5 of the next 6 baskets in the game to take a 76-60 lead with under a minute to play.
The Clippers fall to 0-13 overall and 0-9 in the East Coast Conference. Bridgeport improves to 7-8 overall and evens their East Coast Conference record at 4-4.
Concordia will travel to Flushing, NY on Saturday, January 19th
to take on the Queens College Knights. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
