ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Concordia Clippers softball team returned to action on Wednesday with a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games at Dominican (N.Y.) College. Concordia was unable to come away with a road victory as the Chargers took an 11-1 win in five innings in game one and followed with a 4-3 win in game two.
In the first game, Dominican would score three runs in the first inning and seven runs in the second to lead 10-0. The Chargers would add their final run of the game in the third as the Clippers' lone run came in the top of the fourth after freshman Stephanie Ryder (New Rochelle, N.Y.) hit a RBI double to center field.
Sophomore MacKenna Powell (Milford, Pa.) was tagged with the loss for Concordia as she allowed nine earned runs on seven hits while striking out a batter in 1.1 innings. Sophomore Shayla Peterson (Bethlehem, Pa.) finished the final 2.2 innings as she allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out a batter.
Game two saw Dominican take a 2-0 lead in the third inning as the Clippers cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth after freshman Carly Acuña (North Hills, Calif.) recorded a RBI single to left field. The Chargers added a lone run in the home half of the fifth inning as Concordia now trailed 3-1.
The Clippers would tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning as junior Tori Tansley (Old Forge, Pa.) hit a two-run home run, her first of the season, to get Concordia back in the game. Dominican was held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, and the Clippers were unable to score the go-ahead run in the seventh.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Chargers would get a runner on third base and scored the game-winning run off an error by Concordia as Dominican captured the 4-3 walk-off victory. Senior Sarah Ross (Dunmore, Pa.) pitched the complete game for the Clippers as she allowed three earned runs on four hits while striking out a batter.
Concordia (4-10, 2-6 CACC) will play in their home opener on Saturday afternoon against Holy Family University. First pitch of the CACC doubleheader at Clipper Softball Field is set for 1 p.m.
