Clippers Fall on Day One of CACC Tournament

The Clippers headed to the CACC Softball Tournament for the second year in a row.  The Clippers first challenge was the Bloomfield College Deacons.

The Clippers opened up the scoring in the game in the bottom of the first as Jaime Lorenzo hit a two out solo home run over the right field fence.

Jillian Maselli, in the circle for the Clippers, and the defensive team behind her, were able to hold off the Deacons for the first couple of innings.  The Deacons did put up all eight runs in the third and fourth innings to take an 8-1 lead.

The Clippers started their bats back up in the bottom of the fifth as Victoria Pisciotta led off with a single up the middle.  Laura Brezovsky then grounded out to move Pisciotta up to second.  A single to the shortstop got Dena Frederick on base and the Clippers had runners on the corners.  A double to right center field from Kristina Patrocinio scored Pisciotta.  Frederick then came crossing the plate as a ball passed the catcher and the Clippers cut into the Deacon lead.

The bottom of the sixth saw Rachel Cannata lead off with a single to right field.  Victoria Pisciotta then hit a one out single to right field and the Clippers had two runners on base.  A double to left center from Laura Brezovsky scored Cannata but Pisciotta was thrown out at third.  A single to right field by Dena Frederick scored Brezovsky as the Clippers continued to cut into the lead.

The Clippers continued to hit in the bottom of the seventh after holding the Deacons off once more.  The Clippers had runners in scoring position but the outs ran out too quickly and the Clippers fell in their first game 5-8.

Jaime Lorenzo hit 4 for 4 with a runs scored and an RBI. Dena Frederick hit 3 for 4 and Victoria Pisciotta hit 2 for 2.

The Clippers then faced off against the Post University Eagles in the first elimination game of the tournament.

Alexa Rosella was given the game two ball and headed into the circle for the Clippers.  With a couple of strikeouts and some ground outs and fly balls the Clippers held off the Eagles through the first three innings of play.

The Clippers were able to get a couple of runners into scoring position during the first three innings but fell short and the game was scoreless through three.

The Eagles put three on the board in the top of the fourth to take the first lead of the game 3-0.

The Clippers were unable to answer back in the bottom of the fourth but added one on in the fifth.  Dena Frederick reached first off of an error.  Kristina Patrocinio then hit a double to left field and the Clippers had two runners in scoring position.  A ground out by Jaime Lorenzo scored Frederick and the Clippers were finally on the board in the game.

Unfortunately the Eagles tacked on three more runs and were able to hold the Clippers off.  The Clippers fell 1-6 and were eliminated from the tournament.

The Clippers finish with a 25-14 overall.
