Clippers find two wins in Florida over Spring Break

The Lady Clippers Softball team spent their spring break in Clermont, Florida where they played eight games facing six different opponents.
The Clippers started their week with facing St. Anselm’s
College. In the first three innings the Clippers charged out
as they hit two home runs (Angela D’Amico – solo; Alexa
Rosella – 3 run) and added four other hits to take a 6-1 lead
over St. Anselm’s. The Clippers went on to score three
more and sealed their season opener with a 9-2 victory.
Freshman Theresa Magnani made her collegiate debut on the mound as
she pitched a complete game and nabbing her first win.
The Clippers next faced off against Lake Superior State University. Hitting continued for the Clippers as they went toe-to-toe with Lake Superior. After five innings of play the score was tied at 3. Lake Superior scored in the top of the 6th and the Clippers unfortunately could not answer back in the next two innings of offense and just missed with a score of 3-4.
Tuesday the Clippers squared off once more with St.
Anselm’s College. The Clippers put 4
runs with 5 hits as they batted their way around the line-up.
St. Anselm made the game interesting with answering back in the
next couple of innings. The Clippers then took the lead one
more time and in the bottom of the seventh St. Anselm’s once
again tied the game up pushing into extra innings. The
Clippers scored once in the top of the ninth but St. Anselm
answered with a two run home run to take the game in the bottom
half of the inning with a score of 11-10.
After the long battle with St. Anselm’s, the Clippers faced off against Lebanon Valley College. The Clippers continued to hit as they jumped out to a two run lead after two innings of play. As Lebanon Valley started to hit and score runs, the Clippers pace slowed and Lebanon Valley took the lead. The Clippers tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh but were only able to score one run out of the four needed to tie the game up. The Clippers fell to Lebanon Valley 6-3.
On Wednesday the Clippers got their first taste of the CACC as they faced off against Dominican College in a non-conference double header. The first game was a close battle for both teams as each were pushing themselves. The Clippers though struggled with finding hits during the day and were only able to get 6 hits for 3 runs. The Chargers of Dominican over took the Clippers with 12 hits enabling them to score 5 runs and take game one.
Game two of the match-up saw the Clippers bats struggle to once
more to produce hits and get only two people on base for the
game. The Chargers of Dominican moved along with 9 hits and
scoring four runs to shut the Clippers out.
Thursday was the final day of play for the Clippers. Capital College was the day’s first opponent. The Clippers regrouped and found their offensive stride as they took an early 2-0 lead and held it through four innings of play. Capital College added 3 runs in the next two innings to steal the lead. The Clippers unfortunately could not get anyone on base in the seventh and fell to Capital 3-2.
The Clippers last game of the week pitted them against Concordia University of Michigan. The Clippers went out strong, going up 5-0 after four innings. The Clippers continued to hit well in the game notching 13 hits total. Concordia University attempted to get back into the game but they were only able to score 2 and the Clippers put their second win in the books.
Theresa Magnani notched two wins in the week with a 2.58 era and 14 strike outs. Alexa Rosella led in strike outs with 21 while Jill Maselli added 11 of her own.
Alexa Rosella was an offensive machine for the Clippers hitting
.433 for the week with 13
hits, 14 RBI’s, 2 triples, 1 home run (a 3 run homer), and 1
double. Jaime Lorenzo hit .423 for the week with 11 hits, 10
runs, and 5 doubles and added 23 put-outs in the field.
Victoria Pisciotta captured 33 put-outs from behind the plate while
Jenna Stueber added 33 put-outs from 1st base.
Angel D’Amico notched her first home run of the season and
added 21 assists from the field.
The Clippers will face off against Briarcliffe College on March 17th.
