Clippers split CACC opener
The Clippers headed down to Wilmington, Delaware to face off against the Goldey-Beacom College in their first CACC double header.
The Clippers started their first of two games off strong as lead off hitter Dena Frederick hit a single. With another single by Jaime Lorenzo, Frederick moved to second and the Clippers had two runners on base. Lorenzo and Frederick moved into scoring position after Alexa Rosella grounded out to move them. Unfortunately the Clippers couldn’t score and it was now the defenses turn to work.
Alexa Rosella was called to pitch for the Clippers and successfully completed the first three innings with only letting one person on base. The Clippers struggled to get runners on base and in scoring position through the next couple of innings. The Lightning were able to score one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Clippers looked to even up the score in the top of the
sixth. Jaime Lorenzo led the inning off with single.
Alexa Rosella knocked a single of her own and moved Lorenzo up to
third. Angela D’Amico hit into a fielder’s choice
and Lorenzo was tagged out by the third baseman while Rosella moved
to second. D’Amico and Rosella were in scoring put into
scoring position as Theresa Magnani grounded out. The
Clippers couldn’t capitalize in the rest of the sixth and
were unable to have anyone on base in the seventh. The
Clippers dropped the first game 1-0.
The second game saw the Clippers bats return. Dena Frederick hit another lead off single. Kristina Patrocinio laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Frederick over to second and placed her in scoring position. Jaime Lorenzo hit a shot to shortstop to cause an error by the Lightning and the Clippers had runners on second and third. A single from Alexa Rosella scored Frederick and Lorenzo and the Clippers took their first lead of the day.
Jillian Maselli, the second game hurler for the Clippers, took care of the Lightning as she retired the Lightning; one, two, three, in the first inning.
Jenna Stueber hit a one out single to get aboard and was moved to second right after as Laura Brezovsky was walked. Dena Frederick reached first base on an error and the Clippers loaded the bases. The Clippers missed scoring any of the runners in the second but were not deterred. The third inning brought good fortune to the Clippers as Alexa Rosella led the inning off with a single. Angela D’Amico followed up with a double to score Rosella. Victoria Pisciotta singled as the Clippers continued to hit. Maria DeMartino hit a singled who scored D’Amico and Pisciotta and the Clippers were up 5-0.
Jillian Maselli took care of the Lightning through the rest of the
game as she only allowed 3 hits in the entire game as she picked up
her first win of the season.
The Clippers took game two 5-0 and won their first CACC game.
Alexa Rosella went 3 for 6 with 2 RBI’s and 1 run scored. Jaime Lorenzo went 2 for 7 for the day for the Clippers while lead off hitter Dena Frederick went 3 for 8.
The Clippers will next face off at Dominican College on Tuesday, March 23rd.
