Sparkill, NY - The Concordia College softball team swept the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College 2-1 and 6-1 in an East Coast Conference doubleheader yesterday at Spartan Field in Sparkill, NY. The Clippers earned their first ECC wins of the season to improve to 2-6 in conference play and 9-11 overall. The Spartans fall to 3-24 on the year and 0-10 in conference action.

The Clippers fell behind 1-0 in the 3rd inning when Angela Squillini crushed a home run off of sophomore Alexa Rosella (Howard Beach, NY). Rosella finished the game allowing only 4 hits and an earned run with 4 strikeouts to improve to 5-3 on the year.

The score would remain 1-0 until the 6th inning when senior Alex Mazza (Bronx, NY) singled home Rosella from second base, tying the game at 1-1.

In the 7th inning, senior Julie Walsh (Bellerose, NY) led off with a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jaime Lorenzo (Eastchester, NY) moved Walsh over to third base with a single. Walsh scored the winning run on an error by the Spartan pitcher.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, St. Thomas Aquinas put the tying run on second base, as Squillini hit a 2-out double. But, Rosella induced a pop-up and caught the final out of the game for the Clippers.

Squillini finished with an RBI and went 3-3 from the plate, including a solo home run. Amanda Forsythe gets the loss for the Spartans, lasting 7 innings and allowing 9 hits and an earned run.

In the 1st inning of game two, Lorenzo singled with runners on first and second to put Concordia ahead 1-0. Two batters later, Rosella drove in two more runs with a double to increase the lead to 3-0. The Clippers would add one more run as sophomore Dena Frederick (White Plains, NY) singled home a runner on second base to put Concordia ahead 4-0.

The Spartans cut into the deficit in the 4th inning as Jess Rickel hit a home run to make the score 4-1.

In the 7th inning, freshman Angela D'Amico (Old Bridge, NJ) led off with a walk and advanced to second base on a fielder's choice. Freshman Victoria Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, NY) drove in a run on an error by the Spartan pitcher. The final run of the game came when freshman Jenna Stueber (Roosevelt, NY) grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Rosella from third base and putting the Clippers in front 6-1.

Sophomore Jillian Maselli (Bellmore, NY) pitched 7 inning and gave up only 4 hits and an earned run. Maselli improves to 2-4 on the year.

Concordia will travel to Brookhaven, NY on Tuesday, April 14th to face the Golden Lions of Dowling College in an East Coast Conference showdown. Game one of the doubleheader will start at 3:00 PM.
