Mazza's Home Run Sparks Game One Victory

Bloomfield, NJ - Senior Alex Mazza (Bronx, NY) blasted a 3-run home run in game one of a doubleheader yesterday as the Clippers split with the Deacons of Bloomfield College at Pulaski Field in Bloomfield, NJ. Concordia took the opener 7-3 and fell in the second game 1-0.

The Clippers opened the scoring in the 1st inning on an RBI single by sophomore Alexa Rosella (Howard Beach, NY) that scored senior Julie Walsh (Bellerose, NY) from third base.

In the 2nd inning, Mallorie Matthews crushed a 2-out home run for the Deacons to tie the score at 1-1.

The Clippers would take the lead again in the 4th inning as Rosella led off the inning with a single, followed by a single by freshman Victoria Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, NY). Mazza then stepped up to the plate and crushed her first home run of the season to put Concordia in front 4-1. The Clippers added another run as freshman Ashley Corriss (Sayville, NY) singled, then stole second base. Corriss advanced to third on an error by the Bloomfield catcher and then scored to increase the Clipper lead to 5-1.

The Clippers would continue to pound out the hits in the 5th inning as sophomore Jaime Lorenzo (Eastchester, NY) hit a lead-off double and freshman Angela D'Amico (Old Bridge, NJ) matched it to drive home Lorenzo from second base. Two batters later, Pisciotta singled home D'Amico who had advanced to third base to put Concordia ahead 7-1.

In the bottom half of the inning, Vickie Berardi hit a 2-out double with runners on the corners to cut the Bloomfield deficit to 7-2. The Deacons got the final run of the game in the 7th inning as Kira Wagar hit a single with 2 outs to score Daliana Perez from third base making the final score 7-3.

Rosella pitched a complete game for the Clippers, giving up 7 hits and 3 earned runs with 5 strikeouts. Rosella improves to 4-3 on the season. Meagan Riemann took the loss for the Deacons, allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs.

In the second game, Amanda Bartels hit a bases loaded sac fly for Bloomfield in the 3rd inning for the games only run. Sophomore Dena Frederick (White Plains, NY) collected 2 hits, while Corriss and Rosella each finished with 1 hit. Sophomore Jillian Maselli (Bellmore, NY) picked-up the loss for the Clippers, lasting 6 innings and giving up 3 hits and an earned run. Maselli falls to 1-4 on the year.

With the split, Concordia now stands at 7-11 on the season. The Deacons move to 19-6 overall.

The Clippers will jump back into East Coast Conference action on Tuesday, April 7th, as they host the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology in a doubleheader at Clipper Softball Field. Game one will begin at 3:00 PM.
