Clippers Finish Season with Sweep of Bridgeport
Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College softball team concluded the 2009 season with a sweep of the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights this afternoon at Clipper Softball Field in Bronxville, NY. The Clippers won the first game by a score of 3-0 and took game two with a thrilling come from behind 3-2 victory in 10 innings.
In game one, the Clippers posted all three runs in the 2nd inning. Freshman Angela D'Amico (Old Bridge, NJ) and senior Julie Walsh (Bellerose, NY) both got on board with singles. Senior Kelly Moran (Fishkill, NY) then doubled to left field to score D'Amico from second base. Senior Caitlin Orlando (Mineola, NY) singled through the left side to drive in a run and put the Clippers up 2-0. Concordia got the final run of the game when Ashley Corriss (Sayville, NY) singled home Moran and made it a 3-0 ball game.
Sophomore Alexa Rosella (Howard Beach, NY) pitched a complete game for the Clippers and surrendered only 4 hits in 7 innings and struck out 6 batters.
In the second game, the Purple Knights posted runners on second and third in the 4th inning for Nicole Steiner, who grounded out to second base, driving in the first run of the game. Katie McMitchell then hit a sac fly left field to score the runner on third base and put Bridgeport ahead 2-0.
The Clippers responded in the bottom half of the 4th inning, as Orlando hit an infield single with the bases loaded to cut the Clipper deficit to 2-1.
The score would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the 7th inning, as sophomore Jaime Lorenzo (Eastchester, NY) hit a 2-out double to center field that scored freshman Nicole Spadaro (Merrick, NY) from first base and tied the game at 2-2.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, with Spadaro on second base, freshman Victoria Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, NY) blasted a single to center field that drove in the game winning run for Concordia.
Moran pitched 5 innings in relief and allowed 4 hits in picking up the win.
The Clippers conclude the 2009 season with an overall record of 14-16 and 7-11 in the East Coast Conference.
