Rosella's Game-Winning RBI Propels Clippers to Sweep of Mavericks

Dobbs Ferry, NY - Sophomore Alexa Rosella (Howard Beach, NY) came through with the game winning RBI in the top of the 8th inning to help the Clippers sweep the Mavericks of Mercy College yesterday afternoon in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Concordia took game one 6-3 and Rosella's RBI clinched the game two win 8-7 in 8 innings.

The Clippers started off the second game with 4 runs in the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, sophomore Jaime Lorenzo (Eastchester, NY) doubled to left field with a runner on base to increase the lead to 5-0. Two batters later, freshman Victoria Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, NY) reached on an error by the Maverick pitcher, scoring Lorenzo from third base to make it a 6-0 Clipper advantage.

In the 3rd inning, Lorenzo came through with her second RBI of the game, a 2-out single through the right side of the Mercy infield to score senior Caitlin Orlando (Mineola, NY) from third base and put the Clippers ahead 7-0.

The Mavericks started to make some noise in the 6th inning, as Kim Curry hit a 2 RBI double to left field to cut the deficit to 7-2. Krissy Lacik and Catherine Kowalski each drove in a run and the Mavericks were down 7-4 after 6 innings.

In the 7th inning, Brittney Stockart doubled to left field with the bases loaded, driving in 2 runs and making it a 1 run ballgame. Two batters later, Stephanie Owsiany singled home the tying run.

Freshman Ashley Corriss (Sayville, NY) singled with 1-out in the top of the 8th inning followed by a double to left centerfield by sophomore Dena Frederick (White Plains, NY) to put runners at second and third. The next batter up to the plate would be Rosella, who came through with the game winning single. The Mavericks went down in order in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Freshman Maria DeMartino (Staten Island, NY) picked-up her first win of the year with 1.2 innings pitched and allowing only 1 hit. Stephanie Pereyo picks up the loss for the Mavericks in 8 innings of work and allowing 14 hits and 7 earned runs.

In the first game, senior Kelly Moran (Fishkill, NY) singled with the bases loaded to right center field to put the Clippers ahead 2-0 in the 2nd inning. Corriss followed with a double down the right field line to add a run and put the Clippers up 3-0.

In the bottom half of the inning, Curry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the Mercy deficit to 3-1.

The Clippers would double their score in the 3rd inning with 3 runs to lead 6-1.

The final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the 7th inning, as the Mavercks got back-to-back singles with the bases loaded from Stockart and Lacik to make the final score 6-3.

Rosella pitched 6 innings and gave up 8 hits and 3 earned runs and also totaled 6 strikeouts. Sophomore Jillian Maselli (Bellmore, NY) pitched the final inning to get the save for the Clippers. Stockart gets the loss for the Mavericks, throwing for 3 innings and allowing 8 hits and 4 earned runs.

The Clippers improve to 12-16 overall and 5-11 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy drops to 16-17 on the season and 5-12 in conference play.

The Clippers will conclude the 2009 softball season on Saturday, April 25t, as they host the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport at Clipper Softball Field. It will be Senior Day, as Caitlin Orlando, Kelly Moran, Alex Mazza and Julie Walsh will be playing their final collegiate game for the Clippers. First pitch of the doubleheader will be at 12:30 PM.
