Softball Splits with NYIT
Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College softball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader with the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology today at Clipper Softball Field in Bronxville, NY. Concordia took the opener 9-1, while the Bears held off the Clippers 6-4 in the second game.
The Clippers jumped on the board in the 1st inning when sophomore Jaime Lorenzo (Eastchester, NY) belted an RBI double to center field, scoring senior Julie Walsh (Bellerose, NY) from first base. Sophomore Alexa Rosella (Howard Beach, NY) hit an RBI single up the middle to put the Clippers ahead 2-0.
After back-to-back doubles in the 2nd inning to increase the lead to 3-0, the Clippers put up 4 runs in the 4th inning. With the bases loaded, Walsh cleared the bases with a double to left center field. Lorenzo then hit her second RBI of the game when she singled down the right field line to put the Clippers ahead 7-1.
Concordia picked-up the final two runs of the game in the 5th inning, as sophomore Dena Frederick (White Plains, NY) and freshman Victoria Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, NY) had consecutive hits with runners in scoring position to end the game at 9-1.
Rosella pitched a complete game for the Clippers, surrendering just 3 hits and striking out 4 batters. Rosella improves to 6-3 on the season.
In the second game, the Clippers found themselves down 6-0 in the bottom of the 7th inning. Rosella doubled to center field and freshman Angela D'Amico (Old Bridge, NJ) drove Rosella home with a double to make the score 6-1. Two batters later, Frederick singled home the speedy junior Janine Zezze (Bronxville, NY), who pinch ran for D'Amico. Two batters later, with runners on the corners, freshman Nicole Spadaro (Merrick, NY) reached on a fielder's choice to score the runner on third base and cut the deficit to 6-3. Freshman Ashley Corriss (Sayvile, NY) grounded out the second baseman to score senior Alex Mazza (Bronx, NY) from third base. With the tying run at the plate and two outs, Walsh struck out looking to end the game.
Sophomore Jillian Maselli (Bellmore, NY) picks up the loss for the Clippers, lasting 6 innings and giving up 9 hits and 4 earned runs. Maselli falls to 2-6 on the year.
With the split, Concordia now stands at 10-14 overall and 3-9 in the East Coast Conference. The Bears move to 30-17-1 overall and 9-1 in conference play.
The Clippers will travel to Garden City, NY on Tuesday, April 21st to take on the Panthers of Adelphi University in an ECC doubleheader. The first game will begin at 3:00 PM.
