Softball Sweeps Sixth Ranked Warriors
Clermont, FL - Behind outstanding pitching and timely hitting, the Concordia College softball team swept the Warriors of Winona State University 2-1 and 2-1 today at the National Training Center in Clermont, FL. Winona State is currently ranked 6th in the nation in NCAA Division II softball, according to the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll released earlier today.
In Game 1, sophomore Alexa Rosella (Howard Beach, NY) pitched a complete game for the Clippers. Rosella surrendered just 7 hits and struck out 2 Warrior batters. Winona State entered today's doubleheader averaging 12.1 hits per game and 9.5 runs per game. Freshman Jenna Stueber (Roosevelt Island, NY) drove home the winning run, an RBI double in the bottom of the 7th inning to clinch the win for Concordia.
In Game 2, senior Kelly Moran (Fishkill, NY) picked up the win for Concordia and sophomore Jillian Maselli (Bellmore, NY) came on in relief to register the save. Stueber picked up where she left off in game 1, adding another game winning hit to seal the victory for the Clippers. Sophomore Jaime Lorenzo (Eastchester, NY) went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
With the sweep, the Clippers improve to 3-3 on the season. The No. 6 ranked Warriors of Winona State fall to 11-3 on the season.
Concordia will wrap-up their Spring Break Trip on Thursday, March 5th, as they take on the Golden Rams of West Chester University at 9:30 AM and the Millersville University Marauders at 11:30 AM. The Clippers have faced both teams earlier in the week. Concordia opened the 2009 season with a 4-3 win over Millersville on Monday and fell to the Golden Rams 9-0 later that day.
