Giralo Swings Clippers Past Mavericks
Bronxville, NY - Senior Tara Giralo (Anthem, AZ) delivered a clutch 1-out single in the bottom of the 9th inning to score the winning run in the second game of a doubleheader against the Mavericks of Mercy College yesterday 5-4 at Clipper Softball Field in Bronxville, NY. The Clippers won game one 5-3 and took game two 5-4 in 9 innings. The sweep moves the Clippers record to 7-17 overall and 3-11 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy College drops to 7-22 overall and 2-10 in the East Coast Conference.
Game 2
In the 6th inning, with the Clippers ahead 2-1, freshman Alexa Rosella (Howard Beach, NY) drew a 2-out walk. The next batter was freshman Jaime Lorenzo (Eastchester, NY), who her first triple of the season to push the lead to 3-1. Concordia would add an additional run from junior Julie Walsh (Bellerose, NY), who singled up the middle to drive in Lorenzo from third base to put the Clippers ahead 4-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Mavericks got back to back singles from Samantha LaBella and Kim Curry. Up next, Catherine Kowalski smashed a pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at 4-4.
The score would remain tied until the bottom of the 9th inning. Junior Alex Mazza (Bronx, NY) doubled to left center field. The speedy Cristhal Carrero (Tuckahoe, NY) came in to pinch run for Mazza. Junior Kelly Moran (Fishkill, NY) grounded out to the Maverick third baseman and Carrero advanced to third on the throw. Up stepped Giralo to the plate to deliver the game-winning single to center field.
Freshman Jillian Maselli (Bellmore, NY) pitched a complete game for the Clippers, giving up 9 hits and 3 earned runs with 5 strikeouts for the game. Maselli improves to 3-7 overall.
Game 1
In the 5th inning, with runners on the corners, Rosella tripled to right field to put the Clippers up 2-0. Two batters later, Walsh hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Clippers a 3-0 lead. Walsh leads the Clippers in RBI with 13.
The Clippers would add two more runs in the 6th inning as senior Ashley Spose (North Haven, CT) singled home a runner on third base and Mazza got an RBI with the bases loaded to push the score to 5-0.
The Mavericks would not go away without a battle. In the top of the 7th inning, with runners on first and second base, Jessica Madick singled to center field to drive in a run. Chelsea Methot doubled to center field to drive in the second run for the Mavericks and Stephanie Owsiany knocked in the third run to cut the Maverick deficit to 5-3. With the tying run coming to the plate, Ali Truss flied out to center field to end the scoring threat.
Giralo pitched 7 innings for the Clippers, allowing 9 hits and no earned runs with 1 strikeout. Giralo improves to 2-1 on the year.
Concordia will travel to West Haven, CT on Saturday, April 19th to face the Chargers of the University of New Haven in an ECC doubleheader. Game one will begin at 1:00 PM.
