Philadelphia, Pa. – For the second straight season the Concordia men's Tennis team captured both the singles and doubles "A" draws at the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regionals at the Legacy Youth Tennis Center.
Junior Juuso Ojanen (Varkaus, Finland) would upset the top-seed and fellow Clipper senior Daniele Piludu (Cagliari, Italy) in the quarterfinals of singles play 7-6 (0), 6-3. Ojanen would meet junior Tomasz Olfans (Opole, Poland) in the next round where he went on to win 6-3, 4-0 (retired) to earn a spot in the championship match.
On the other side of the singles bracket junior Benas Majauskas (Vilnius, Lithuania) earned a 6-4, 7-5 over Nicolas Auruccio of NYIT in the semifinals to make the championship an all-Concordia match. Ojanen would continue his dominance in singles play as he defeated Majauskas 6-3, 4-1 (retired) to claim the singles "A" title.
In the doubles "A" draw there would be another all-Concordia championship match as the duo of Piludu and Majauskas battled Ojanen and freshman Pulat Babadjanov (Tashkent, Uzbekistan). Senior Ricardo Frey (Curitiba, Brazil) and Olfans were knocked out in the quarterfinals of the doubles "A" draw against NYIT's Mircea Dimofte and Arruccio, 8-6. In the championship match the duo of Piludu/Majauskas would edge out a 7-6 (6) win in the first set and then secured a 6-3 victory in the second set to claim the doubles title.
Majauskas, Ojanen, and Piludu will next represent Concordia and the East Region at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships. The event will take place at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Fort Myers, Fla. from Oct. 10th-13th.
