No. 6 Clippers Edge No. 9 Lander in NCAA Quarterfinals, 5-2

Surprise, Ariz. – The 6th-ranked Clippers men's tennis team had a tough battle on Thursday afternoon against the 9th-ranked Bearcats of Lander University in the NCAA Quarterfinals match. Concordia would earn their second victory all-time against the Bearcats after a 5-2 victory and a spot in the NCAA Semifinals for the first time since 2011.

The Clippers began the afternoon with a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, just as they did yesterday against No. 24 Northwest Mo. State. Senior Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and junior Daniele Piludu (Cagliari, Italy) would edge August Iwdal and Adam Jonsson in their No. 1 match 8-6 to give Concordia an early 1-0 lead.

Sophomore's Tomasz Olfans (Opole, Poland) and Benas Majauskas (Vilnius, Lithuania) would finish next in their No. 2 match with an 8-6 win against Paul-Henri Arrigoni and Vincent Verpeaux.

Lander would take the No. 3 match 8-5 as Oscar Axelsson and Samuel Poutignat defeated senior's David Tisserand (Lyon, France) and Andreas Lindell (Helsingborg, Sweden) to prevent the Clippers from sweeping the doubles matches.

Boldarev would give Concordia a 3-1 overall match advantage as he powered his way to a 6-2, 6-4 win in his No. 1 singles match against Arrigoni. Olfans would get the Clippers one step closer to the match victory as his dominating 6-2, 6-2 win over Poutignat in the No. 3 match would give Concordia a 4-1 match lead.

The Bearcats would take one singles match as Diego Zegarra defeated Lindell 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in the No. 6 match to trail the Clippers 4-2. Piludu would take the match-clinching victory as his 7-6, 6-3 win over Verpeaux in the No. 2 match secured the 5-2 victory.

Tisserand was in a third set in his No. 4 match against Axelsson with the score 3-6, 6-4, 1-1 when Piludu was victorious while Majauskas was in his second set against Jonsson in the No. 5 match 7-6 (7-4), 5-5.

The Clippers (22-2, 6-0 CACC) will next face No. 1 Barry University in the NCAA Semifinals Friday at 11am EST. The Bucs took a 5-1 victory in their NCAA Quarterfinals match this afternoon against No. 5 Hawaii Pacific. Concordia is 1-4 against Barry all-time with their only win occurring on Mar. 4, 2011.

The Bucs eliminated the Clippers from the 2011 NCAA Semifinals in their last meeting as Barry went on to finish runner-up in the tournament for the fifth time in the program's history.
