Concordia Competes in Satran Tournament

Flushing, NY - The Concordia College men's tennis team competed in the Scott Satran Tournament this past weekend at Queens College in Flushing, NY. The Clippers won four of the six singles flights and all three doubles flights. The tournament featured four Division I schools and four Division II programs. College of the Holy Cross, St. Peters College, Hofstra University and Monmouth University comprised the Division I teams, while the Division II field had a familiar feel with Concordia College, Queens College, Mercy College and Dowling College, all from the East Coast Conference.

Sophomore Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) won the 1st Flight with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Fabio Minami of Queens College. Grubin, the top ranked player in DII men's tennis, defeated Tony Wilkey of St. Peters College 6-1, 6-2 and Petr Grishchenko of Dowling College 6-0, 6-1 to reach the finals.

In the 2nd Flight, sophomore Filippo Figliomeni (Genova, Italy) was also dominant in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mehdi Rhazali of Mercy College. Filippo beat two Division I opponents, Peter Czajka of St. Peters and Nenad Radakouic of Hofstra, on his way to the Flight 2 title.

Also claiming singles titles were freshman Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) at the 3rd Flight and sophomore Richard Malobicky (Pulheim, Germany) at the 4th Flight. Boldarev beat Taylor Crabill of Queens College 6-1, 6-0 in the finals while Malobicky defeated David Hiraoka of Queens College 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Karim Belhadj (London, England) lost to Kukas Pospisel of St. Peters 6-4, 7-5 in the quarter-finals and senior Vito Galatioto (Yonkers, NY) was defeated by Jesse Smith of Queens College in the semi-finals 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles, the Clippers proved their worth by sweeping all three flights. Grubin and Figliomeni won 8-0 in the 1st Flight. Malobicky and junior Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) won 8-2 over ECC foe Mercy College in the 2nd Flight and Belhadj and Boldarev defeated Monmouth University 8-2 in the 3rd Flight.

The Clippers return to action on Wednesday, September 24th, as they travel to the Bronx, NY to face the Rams of Fordham University. The action begins at 3;00 PM.
