Men's Tennis Coasts to Round of 16
Results vs. Univ. Sciences in Philadelphia
Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College men's tennis team will be heading back to the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship Round of 16 by virtue of sweeping the University of Sciences in Philadelphia 5-0 on Friday in Flushing, NY and sweeping Merrimack College 5-0 on Saturday in the second round in Bronxville, NY.
Against the Devils of the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, sophomore Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) and freshman Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) beat Franciso Garcia and William Fine at No. 1 doubles 8-1. Senior Karim Belhadj (London, England) and freshman Viktor Kim (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) defeated Richardo Matrins and Paul Caseres at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Richi Malobicky (Pulheim, Germany) and junior Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) easily disposed of Christopher Lukose and Dan Rubin by a score of 8-0.
Needing only two more win in singles play to advance to the second round, both Grubin and Ruenz were victorious at No. 1 singles and No. 5 singles, respectively, by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.
On Saturday, the tournament moved to the Meyers Tennis Center in Bronxville, NY. Grubin and Boldarev posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Max Eppley and John Seaward. At No. 2 doubles, Belhadj and Kim won an 8-2 decision over Sean Pahler and Steve Viglione, while Malobicky and Ruenz took care of Adam Wilding and Liam Hoare 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Grubin put the Clippers up 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Wilding. At. No. 3 singles, Malobicky came through with a 6-2, 6-0 win to launch the Clippers back to the NCAA Round of 16.
Concordia improves to 19-3 on the season.
The NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship Round of 16 will begin on Wednesday, May 13th at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL. The Clippers will face the Atlantic Region #2 bracket winner, the Huskies of Bloomsburg University. The Clippers defeated the Huskies 9-0 back on April 17th in Bloomsburg, PA.
