Men's Tennis Rolls into NCAA Semifinals with 5-3 Win
NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Bracket
Altamonte Springs, FL - The Concordia College men's tennis team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Timberwolves of Northwood University (MI) 5-3 this afternoon in the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Quarterfinals at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.
Concordia took the first doubles point with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles by sophomore Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) and freshman Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) over Peter Kazianschuetz and Frederic Schoelzel. The Timberwolves would answer at with an 8-6 win by Bertrand Vigouroux and Maxime Dutors over junior Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) and sophomore Richi Malobicky (Pulheim, Germany) at No. 3 doubles. Northwood would take a 2-1 lead into singles play when Oliver Brignoli and Alex Minicozzi outlasted senior Karim Belhadj (London, England) and freshman Viktor Kim (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) at No. 2 doubles.
The Timberwolves would earn their final point of the match in the race to five points when Brignoli downed Belhadj 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles for a 3-1 advantage.
At. No. 6 singles, Ruenz started the Clipper comeback by beating Minicozzi 6-2, 6-2 to cut the Concordia deficit to 3-2. The top three singles slots all went to the Clippers as Grubin beat Kazianschuetz 7-6, 6-1, Boldarev won against Schoelzel 6-2, 7-5 and Malobicky topped Vigouroux 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, respectively.
The No. 12 ranked Clippers have won 20 consecutive matches and improve to 21-3 on the season. The No. 11 ranked Timberwolves conclude their season with a record of 20-2.
Concordia will head into the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship Semifinals against the No. 2 ranked Bucs of Barry University on Friday, May 15th at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL. The Bucs took out the No. 7 ranked Bobcats of Georgia College & State University by a final score of 5-0. The Semifinals will begin at 9:00 AM.
