Concordia Sails Past Hawks 7-0
Ocean, NJ - The Concordia College men's tennis team easily defeated the Hawks of Monmouth University 7-0 yesterday afternoon in Ocean, NJ. The Hawks are the third Division I team the Clippers have defeated this season. Concordia has won 7 straight matches and improve to 8-3 on the season. Monmouth falls to 2-10 overall.
Junior Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) and sophomore Richi Malobicky (Pulheim, Germany) took out David Sherwood and Tim McLane 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. Senior Karim Belhadj (London, England) and freshman Viktor Kim (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) lost at No. 2 doubles to Laurence Heads and Vik Gupta by a score of 8-6. With the doubles point on the line, sophomore Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) and freshman Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) won an 8-6 decision over Ben Evenden and Ian Terpilowski to give Concordia a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Clippers opened the singles portion of the match with Belhadj and Grubin both dominating their respective opponents 6-0, 6-0. Ruenz was also impressive at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Malobicky topped Heads 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to Concordia ahead 5-0. The closest match of the day came at No. 2 singles, where Boldarev won a 7-4 tiebreaker in the first set before winning the second set 6-2.
Concordia will return home to the Meyers Tennis Center on Tuesday, April 7th to host the Terriers of St. Francis College. First serve is set for 3:00 PM.
