Men's Tennis Surges Past Red Storm 6-3
Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College men's tennis team defeated the Red Storm of St. John's University 6-3 yesterday afternoon at the Meyers Tennis Center in Bronxville, NY. The Clippers have won their 10th straight match and 5th match over an NCAA Division I opponent this season. Concordia improves to 11-3 overall while St. John's falls to 10-9 on the year.
The Clippers took an early 2-1 lead by winning No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) and freshman Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) were victorious in the closest doubles match of the day, an 8-6 win for the Clippers.
In singles play, Boldarev defeated Gustavo Loza 6-0, 6-1 and Grubin won a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 decision over Asaf Honig at No. 1 singles.
Up 4-1 and needing only one more match to claim the win, sophomore Richi Malobicky (Pulheim, Germany) came through with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win to put Concordia ahead 5-1.
The final Concordia point came at No. 6 singles, where junior Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) beat Stefan Nikolic 6-5, 7-5.
Senior Karim Belhadj (London, England) and freshman Viktor Kim (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) lost at No. 4 singles and No. 5 singles, respectively.
The Clippers will host their final regular season match of the year on Wednesday, April 15th at the Meyers Tennis Center against the Rams of Fordham University. The action begins at 3:00 PM.
