Clippers Slay Knights 7-2
Flushing, NY - The Concordia College men's tennis team defeated the Queens College Knights yesterday in Flushing, NY 7-2 in a battle of the top two teams in the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis East Region.
The Clippers took two of the three doubles points to start the match. Freshman Viktor Kim (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and senior Karim Belhadj (London, England) fell by a score of 8-6 to Fabio Minami and James Preston at No. 2 doubles for the Knight's point in the match.
In singles play, freshman Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), the reigning ECC Rookie of the Week, defeated Minami 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) was also dominant with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Patryk Polus. Sophomore Richi Malobicky (Pulheim, Germany) and junior Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) were victorious at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-2 and No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-4, respectively. The closest match of the day was at No. 5 singles, where Kim took the first set 6-3 and lost 6-4 in the second set to Preston. In the end, Kim would prevail with a 10-5 third set win and give the Clippers their seventh point of the match. Belhadj lost to Danilo Hiraoka 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
The Clippers win their fifth straight match and improve to 6-3 on the season and 2-0 in the East Coast Conference. Queens falls to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in the East Coast Conference.
Concordia will be right back in action on Wednesday, April 1st, as they host the Adelphi University Panthers in an ECC match-up. Play begins at 3:00 PM.
