Clippers Fall in Top 10 Showdown 6-3
Winter Park, FL - The Concordia College men's tennis team was defeated by the Tars of Rollins College yesterday 6-3 in a top 10 battle in Winter Park, FL. The Clippers entered the contest ranked 8th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, while the Tars are currently ranked 10th.
The Tars scored 2 of the 3 doubles flights to start the day. Sophomore duo Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) and Richi Malobicky (Pulheim, Germany) defeated Neil Clausen and Bill Rockwood 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. However, the Tars claimed wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Adrian Tan and Jeff Morris defeated freshman Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and senior Karim Belhadl (London, England) 9-8, 10-2 in the tiebreaker. At No. 3 doubles, senior Josep Molet (Sabadell, Spain) and junior Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) fell to Nick Rowlands and Gustavo Carvalho by a score of 9-7.
In singles play, Grubin defeated Tan in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Belhadj beat Rowland 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Rollins was able to capture the remaining singles flights for the 6-3 win. At No. 2 singles, Boldarev dropped a 3-set match to Clausen 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Malobicky lost to Morris 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Molet lost a close 6-4, 7-5 match to Carvalho at No. 4 singles. The final match saw Rockwood defeat Ruenz 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
The Clippers fall to 1-1 on the season, while Rollins College improves to 6-2 on the year.
The Clippers will return to action on Tuesday, March 3rd, as they travel to Daytona Beach, FL to take on the Eagles of Embry-Riddle University. The Eagles are ranked 3rd in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The match begins at 3:30 PM.
