Clippers Edge Division I Knights 4-3
Teaneck, NJ - The Concordia College men's tennis team earned their third straight victory by defeating the Knights of Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University 4-3 yesterday in Teaneck, NJ. Concordia improves to 4-3 on the season while the Knights fall to 4-6 overall.
Concordia took the doubles point two matches to one, as a single point is credited to the team that wins at least two of the three flights in Division I play. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) and freshman Andrey Boldarev (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) defeated Matt Gordon and Andrew Denny by a score of 8-2. Senior Karim Belhadj (London, England) and freshman Viktor Kim (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) lost to Marco Jemersic and Alex Jorne by an 8-2 count at No. 2 doubles. With the double point on the line, junior Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) and sophomore Richi Malobicky (Pulheim, Germany) won a 9-7 thriller over Dominic Hemy and Daniel Quesada to give Concordia a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Clippers took the top two singles matches as Grubin won a 6-2, 6-4 match over Gordon and Boldarev defeated Jemersic 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Malobicky lost a close 7-5, 7-5 decision to Denny at No. 3 singles and Ruenz sealed the win at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jorne.
The Knights earned points at No. 5 singles when Hemy defeated Kim 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 10-8 and Keiichiro Adachi beat Belhadj 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 6 singles.
The Clippers will return to the Meyers Tennis Center on Sunday, March 29th, as they host the Bears of Kutztown University in a non-conference match-up. The action begins at 2:00 PM.
