Clippers Sail Past Rams 5-0
Easton, MA - The Concordia College men's tennis team advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships with a 5-0 victory over the Rams of Philadelphia University today at Stonehill College in Easton, MA.
Concordia opened the match with senior Rodrigo Teixeira (Vitoria, Brazil) and sophomore Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) defeating Anders Novesky and Kyle Kaltenbacher 8-1 at #1 doubles. Junior Josep Molet (Sabadell, Spain) and sophomore Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich, Germany) were the next team to finish. The duo beat Seppi Hutter and Boo Burnier 8-3 at #3 doubles. Concordia made a clean sweep of the doubles matches when seniors Vlad Malkin (Moscow, Russia) and Kirill Azovtsev ( St. Petersburg, Russia) topped Alex Richter and Tom McAvoy at #2 doubles by a score of 8-5.
Needing only two wins in singles play to capture the win, Grubin, who is the top ranked men's tennis player in Division II, made quick work of Kaltenbacher at #1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Shortly thereafter, Ruenz defeated McAvoy at #5 singles 6-1, 6-1 to vault the Clippers into the second round of the tournament.
The 12th ranked Clippers will take on the winner of the second
match of the afternoon between the Queens College Knights and the
host Skyhawks of Stonehill College. The match will begin at 11:00
AM.
