Grubin Captures Second Player of the Week Honors
Central Islip, NY - Sophomore Alex Grubin (Belgrade, Serbia) has been named the East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office yesterday. This is the second time this season that the sophomore has won the weekly award.
Grubin led the Clippers to the East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship with a perfect 2-0 singles week and a 2-0 doubles week.
In the ECC Semi-Finals against Adelphi University, Grubin and teammate Nik Boerger (Muenster, Germany) defeated Alex Molotsky and Tomasz Walczak 8-2 at #1 doubles. Grubin helped clinch the 5-0 victory for the Clippers with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #1 singles over Walczak.
The following day in the ECC Finals, Grubin and Boerger beat Taylor Crabill and Marcelo Kim of Queens College 8-2 at #1 doubles. In singles competition, the sophomore downed Fabio Minami at #1 singles 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the championship for Concordia.
Grubin improves to an impressive 17-1 in singles matches this season. All 18 singles matches were at #1 singles. In doubles play, Grubin holds a 16-5 mark on the season, all at #1 doubles.
Concordia is currently ranked 12th in the nation in Division II men's tennis and Grubin is the #1 ranked men's tennis player in Division II.
Concordia will await the selection of the teams into the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Tournament. The first and second rounds of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships takes place May 8th - 10th.
